- Oklahoma's Jake Kreul Named SEC Freshman of the Week After Breakout Night

Jake Kreul went from quiet freshman to SEC award winner in one night, and it was not a soft-stat kind of night either.
The Oklahoma defensive lineman was named SEC Freshman of the Week after tearing up No. 15 Kentucky on Saturday. Six tackles. Three tackles for loss. Two and a half sacks. That is a real coming-out party. Especially for a true freshman who entered the game with three tackles and half a TFL all season.

Kreul did not just hang around the pile and collect leftovers. He was in the backfield all night.
The 2.5 sacks led the SEC for the week and set an Oklahoma true freshman record. The last Sooner freshman to post more was Brian Bosworth all the way back in 1984. That is a wild sentence to write about a kid from Orlando who was still searching for consistent snaps a week ago.
And that is the biggest reason this award feels earned. Oklahoma did not need to invent a highlight package to make him look good. The production was obvious. His three TFLs ranked second in the league for the week and first among freshmen. If you watched the game, you did not walk away wondering how he got the honor. You walked away wondering where that version of Kreul had been for the first five weeks.
The broader defensive night helps explain it too. Kentucky finished with just 230 total yards and 72 on the ground. The Sooners still lost because the offense spent the evening giving the ball away, but the front was not the problem. If anything, Kreul gave Oklahoma a little hope inside an otherwise miserable home result.

The defensive line has been a strength all year. Now a freshman just showed he can be part of that strength instead of just a rotation name.
This is also OU's fourth SEC weekly award of the season. Sategna got one. Bowen got one. Sandell got one. Now Kreul.
Individual recognition has not been the issue for this team. Winning consistently has.
Still, if you are looking for something that actually matters beyond one week, a true freshman defensive lineman exploding like this is a good place to start.
The timing is important because Oklahoma does not get to sit around and feel good about it. The Sooners are 3-3 and headed to Mississippi State on Saturday at 2:30 on SEC Network. Starkville will not care that Kreul just won an award. But if he plays with the same juice again, Oklahoma at least has another guy up front who can wreck a series on his own.
One big game does not mean he has arrived for good. It does mean the standard just changed. Kreul is not a background piece anymore.
After Saturday, he should be part of the conversation every week.
