Not only did the Olentangy Orange gymnastics team enjoy its best season, it was the top Columbus-area program this winter.
Competing in their first state team meet, the Pioneers earned the top central Ohio finish March 7 at Hilliard Bradley, placing fifth (141.3) of 12 teams. DeSales finished sixth (140.675) and Olentangy was eighth (139.4).
Brecksville-Broadview Heights (147.025) won its 23rd consecutive state title and 26th overall.
Orange's season included an OCC-Central championship and its first district title, which was won with a program-record team score of 144.05.
"We had a blast out there [at state]," third-year coach Kaiden Sharrock said. "Our goal was to make it into the top five, so I'm really glad that we were able to accomplish that. I'm very proud of all of the work that we have put in to build this program."
At the individual state meet March 8 at Bradley, Orange senior Macy Medley led central Ohio with an 11th-place finish in the all-around (36.375). She also tied for 11th on vault (9.225).
"I don't think [March 7] as a team we performed the way we wanted to and what I was capable of, but it was such a good experience and I'm so grateful to be there as a team and individually," Medley said.
Also in the all-around, Dublin Jerome junior Erica Lee was 14th (35.65) and Watterson senior Maria D'Orazio was 15th (35.55).
D'Orazio was seventh on floor exercise (9.5).
Olentangy junior Audrey Sprouse finished fourth on balance beam (9.4) and 10th on floor (9.4).
Worthington Kilbourne sophomore Brooke Todd finished ninth on floor (9.45) and 11th on uneven bars (8.85), and Olentangy Liberty sophomore Leah Berger tied for ninth on beam (9.15).
Orange loses Medley, Peyton Rankin and Lila Robinson to graduation.
"This whole class of seniors was really great," Sharrock said. "They definitely set a standard for what I'm going to be looking for moving forward, and it's going to be hard to see them go. ... The returning girls had a fire lit under them [at state], so hopefully they keep that throughout the offseason and the summer and we can jump right back in next year."
