The St. Louis Cardinals hosted the Cleveland Guardians on Monday, taking a 9-3 loss. In the game, Jordan Walker hit a home run, joining franchise legends . Despite the monumental achievement, mistakes plagued the game for the Cardinals.
After the game, Oliver Marmol spoke about the mistakes that hurt the team .
"We're gonna have a pitching staff that's going to go through the ups and downs of what that looks like," Marmol said. "The Fernandez one game speeds up at times, and you're gonna see that from a young group as well. Like it's just, do I love it? Not entirely, but, yeah, there's other things throughout that game that you wanna make sure that you point to in the feedback tomorrow…. You're going to make physical mistakes. This group, they're going to at times make mental mistakes."
Marmol admitted to the mistakes, such as the error by pitcher Ryan Fernandez , which led to three unearned runs scoring by the end of the inning. Still, he wanted to focus on some of the positives as well.
"He (Walker) hits the homer and then, man, in a game where the inning prior you give up some runs to, to beat that out and to still have that level of intensity speaks a lot as to the mentality of not only Jordan, but the crew, like, I love that part of the game," Marmol added.
Walker hit a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the error came in the top of the eighth. Walker did not let that phase him, though. He led off the bottom of the eighth with a ball grounded to third base, beating it out for an infield single.
"That's a big part of the game that we need to continue to kind of highlight," the Cards manager added. "You look at JJ, that's starting to look a little better for staying on the ball hard through the middle of the field, uh, Mason being able to take 3 walks. That's important for him as far as finding different ways of getting on base. So that's good to see."
The Cardinals have a young team this year, but are still 8-8 on the season. They will look to break their three-game skid on Tuesday, facing the Guardians in the second game of the series.
