Before social and digital media took over the world, basketball was primarily an American-centric sport. Although our beloved game was played outside North America, it still wasn't nearly as popular as it is today.
That said, a single event sparked its worldwide rise and marked the dawn of a new era.
The arrival of the Dream Team in Barcelona during the 1992 Olympics changed basketball forever. The sport's biggest names, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson , Scottie Pippen, Charles Barkley, Larry Bird , Clyde Drexler and others, set a new global standard with their sheer dominance, speed, athleticism and unselfishness, which had the whole world in awe.
When asked whether or not the Dream Team had a global impact on the game, Johnson and Bird didn't even think twice.
"No question about it. Those guys would not be in the league, that's in the league today, without the Dream Team. I think that we opened the world's eyes up on our basketball style, our best players. We had fun doing it, we blew everybody out by over 40, 50 points. We came in there to win, but also put on a show for the world, and we did that," Johnson said .
"It was a great experience, one of the greatest experiences you could ever have playing for your country, and playing with a great group of guys that had one goal in common: move the basketball and win, and that's what we did," Bird said.
Key global changes
The 1992 Olympics were televised to over three billion people, so it's no surprise that the Dream Team left a lasting impact. Their dominance and influence inspired a generation of youth worldwide to pursue basketball, especially the NBA. International superstars and eventual Hall of Famers, including Dirk Nowitzki, Tony Parker, Pau Gasol and Manu Ginobili, arrived just a decade later, increasing the league's talent to a new level.
By the 2023-24 NBA season, the number of international players had reached 125 (25 percent of the league), more than five times the 1991-92 season, when there were 23 players (five percent of the league). This also paved the way for the NBA's Global Brands to expand in China, India and Africa.
While many assumed the Dream Team's physical and athletic style would define how the rest of the world played, their influence went far deeper. Most international players don't possess the same size or athleticism as Americans, so they adapted a style rooted in fluidity, creativity, skill and fundamentals.
Today, stars like Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic perfectly embody that approach.
Dream Team's rank amongst other historic teams
The 1992 team didn't just inspire the rest of the world, but also their own country.
After a disappointing bronze-medal finish in the 2004 Olympics, the 2008 Redeem Team took a page out of the Dream Team's book to come back to the top. This legendary roster, led by Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, was joined by other basketball icons like Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard.
In 2012, the recipe hadn't changed, with a large portion of the 2008 squad appearing again. With them, young superstars Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden were brought in, bringing freshness and youthful energy, creating another legendary USA Team that won the gold medal.
With the Dream Team, the 2008 and 2012 squads are ranked among the best ever in U.S. history, where the edge isn't always one-sided. Depending on the generation, any one of those three can be crowned the best.
Whether or not you have the 1992 one as the best team, one thing is for sure: without the Dream Team, there probably wouldn't be the ones that came after them.
