In the afternoon matchup of a doubleheader against the Houston Astros , the Baltimore Orioles ’ offense put on quite a show. In a 10-3 victory, Baltimore catcher Adley Rutschman was the catalyst. His fifth-inning grand slam extended Baltimore’s 1-0 lead to 5-0. MLB shared Rutschman’s blast via X, formerly Twitter.
“Adley Rutschman GRAND SLAM!” exclaimed the league page on Thursday afternoon.
Since returning from a short IL stint, Rutschman has been on a scorching hot streak. Thursday’s grand slam was his fourth home run over the past nine days. The former number one overall pick has driven in 14 runs as well, cementing his place near the heart of the Orioles’ lineup. In addition to the excellent offensive play, his defense behind the dish has been strong as well. This rocket of a throw to nail the Astros’ Jose Altuve at second during Thursday’s win, shared by team beat reporter Jacob Calvin Meyer via X, was a thing of beauty.
In addition to Rutschman, the Orioles has have one of baseball’s top prospects, Samuel Basallo , ready to make an impact at the major league level. Basallo was the number one catcher during Rutschman’s IL stint. He’s also started to emerge from an early season funk, with eight hits over his last three starts.
With both catchers starting to hit their stride, the Orioles will look to climb up the AL East standings. 30 games into the season, Baltimore is 15-15. While that’s good enough for third place in the division, the two teams below them made the playoffs last year. That includes the Toronto Blue Jays , who are 14-16 after falling one game short of winning the World Series last October. Can Rutschman continue his hot streak and help push the O’s back into October?
