The Baltimore Orioles didn't have a great 2026 season, but the presence of Pete Alonso provided a spark worth getting excited about moving forward.
He led the American League in home runs and put up a 4.9 bWAR season, the best season he's had since his 2019 rookie year with the New York Mets . But Alonso has made MLB history with a different season during his Mets tenure.
Sarah Langs shared that Alonso is the first hitter in MLB history since 1920 to lead the American League and the National League in RBIs, as he led the NL in RBIs in 2022 and the AL in 2026.
Pete Alonso made MLB history that surprisingly hasn't happened before
"Pete Alonso led the AL in RBI. He led the NL (and tied for the MLB lead) in 2022. He's the first player to have a season leading each league in RBI in his career (RBI since 1920)," Langs shared.
In 2026 with the Orioles, Alonso has 113 RBIs, which is the most in the American League, although it's not the most in Major League Baseball.
Back in 2022, Alonso had 131 RBIs, the most in the NL and all of MLB that season. Combined with his 2026 production, Alonso has become the first player to finish a season as the league leader in the AL and NL in RBIs.

This is an unexpected MLB record for Alonso, as it's a bit surprising that no other player was ever able to accomplish this fairly straightforward feat.
While players weren't changing teams back then as much as they do now, it's still unexpected that this has never happened before.
But this is still a very impressive feat for Alonso, as he's now the only player to lead both the AL and NL in RBIs in a single season.
He's also led the AL and NL in home runs, hitting 53 homers in his rookie season to lead all of MLB, and hitting 43 homers in 2026 to lead the AL, two behind Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Schwarber for the MLB lead.
This statistic highlights how great Alonso has been for the Orioles, as the new first baseman has become a massive piece of the Orioles' franchise and should be the focal point moving forward for a new era of Orioles baseball.
