The Orlando Magic earned their first win of the season with a 111-102 victory over the defending champion New York Knicks. Even more impressive, the Magic pulled off the victory on the road in their first game without star forward Paolo Banchero.
Without Banchero, the starters stepped up in a major way. Franz Wagner nearly recorded a triple-double, finishing with 23 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists. Desmond Bane added 22 points.

Ahead of an extended road trip next up against the Toronto Raptors, Wendell Carter Jr. met with the media; here's what he had to say.
Takeaways from the Knicks game and what the team wants to carry over: Carter praised the Magic's persistence and ability to remain committed to their approach despite not always getting the desired results. He highlighted the team's competitiveness throughout all 48 minutes against New York, emphasizing the importance of executing with precision and pace on both ends of the floor. He believes maintaining that consistency gives Orlando a strong opportunity to win games.
The team's defensive development under the new system: Carter acknowledged that the Magic are still adjusting to a new defensive system and different principles under head coach Sean Sweeney. However, he emphasized the importance of remaining patient and committed to the process rather than overreacting to early-season struggles. With 82 games in the regular season, Carter believes the team will continue improving as players become more comfortable with their defensive responsibilities.
The biggest defensive adjustment in his role: Carter explained that one of the biggest changes in his defensive responsibilities involves spending more time protecting the basket. He said the coaching staff wants him positioned as the low man more frequently, allowing smaller teammates such as Desmond Bane and Jase Richardson to remain on the perimeter and defend opposing guards. He identified that adjustment as the most significant difference in his role under the new system.

Stepping up with two starters sidelined: Carter emphasized the importance of staying together and maintaining confidence with Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs unavailable. He acknowledged that their absences leave a significant offensive void, requiring other players to step up and take advantage of scoring opportunities. However, he stressed that the team must remain committed to its approach regardless of the results, believing that consistent execution will ultimately lead to success.
The growing number of significant injuries across the NBA : Carter expressed concern over the number of serious injuries affecting prominent players around the league, particularly those that could have long-term implications for their careers. He emphasized that seeing those injuries reinforces the importance of maintaining his own health, conditioning and physical preparation. He also expressed sympathy for the injured players, acknowledging how difficult it is to see some of the league's biggest stars sidelined.
Limiting Toronto's steals, turnovers and second-chance opportunities: Carter identified ball security and rebounding as two of Orlando's biggest priorities against the Raptors. He acknowledged that Toronto's aggressive defense creates turnovers that lead to easy transition opportunities, while its offensive rebounding generates additional scoring chances. Carter emphasized that limiting turnovers and preventing second-chance opportunities will be critical to giving the Magic a strong chance to win.
