The New Orleans Saints are excited about getting a fresh start, where everyone gets a clean slate at 0-0. The opportunity is wide open in the NFC South, and after winning four of their last five games, the expectation is for second-year head coach Kellen Moore to build off that momentum.
New Orleans has made several offseason upgrades that suggest they may be able to do just that, and surrounding Tyler Shough with more talent has been a common theme. The Saints signed new starting running back Travis Etienne Jr. to a $48 million contract, and spent the eighth overall pick on playmaking receiver Jordyn Tyson in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Yet, now a young player on the Saints has apparently decided to retire.

The Saints have seriously upgraded their skill position group this offseason. But now one of their acquisitions from last year won't be continuing his NFL career.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network , 24-year-old wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk has decided to retire. The Saints have placed him on the reserve/retired list.

Polk entered the league as the 37th overall pick in the second round with the New England Patriots in the 2024 NFL Draft. Yet, Polk made a minimal impact as a rookie, starting seven of his 14 appearances, hauling in 12 receptions for 87 yards and two touchdowns.
Unfortunately, Polk suffered a season-ending shoulder injury during Patriots training camp in his second year. A month later, the Patriots surprisingly traded him, along with a 2028 seventh-round pick, to the Saints in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2027.
A team giving up on their second-round pick just a year after selecting him is rare. Then again, any player retiring from the NFL at age 24, when he seemingly would have several more opportunities in his career, comes as a surprise too.
