Football keeps giving us moments that make the result fade into the background. That was the case again last night in the top match between 1. FC Köln and Werder Bremen .
Although SVW did not come away from the Rhine with the full haul and instead returned to the Weser with just one point, there was great joy in coach Daniel Thioune's squad. The reason was a very special comeback: Werder star Mitchell Weiser returned to the pitch after a forced 14-month absence.
In July 2025, Weiser suffered a torn ACL and was forced to watch from the sidelines for the entire previous season. Of all games, he now made his return against the club where he spent six years in his youth. Weiser came on as a substitute in the 81st minute.
After the final whistle, it became clear how emotional and important this moment was for the 32-year-old: his teammates embraced him, and he himself burst into tears.
"I really missed being out on the pitch and fighting for points in a stadium with the boys," Weiser said after the match. He also revealed that he had to fight for his appearance in Cologne: "If it had been up to other people, the comeback probably wouldn't have happened until the next game."
Niclas Füllkrug was also asked about Weiser's comeback and said that he "almost cried too" when he saw "Mitchi with tears in his eyes" in front of the away fans. "Unfortunately, I know what that's like myself," the striker added. "I also had a torn ACL. We're proud of him and happy that he's back."
Surely football fans of all clubs can agree on one thing: scenes like these are always wonderful to watch.
