The Indiana Pacers took the court on Monday night with only six available players, yet they pushed the Atlanta Hawks to the very last second before falling 108-104. This rare lineup featured a combined salary of just $15 million for those playing, while the eleven teammates sitting on the bench earned about $193 million. The Hawks secured the win thanks to a late jumper by Onyeka Okongwu, but the game proved that a team with deep pockets can still be brought to the brink by a handful of determined substitutes.
This matchup marked the first time since November 20, 2004, that the franchise has dressed so few players in a single game. The absence list included stars like Tyrese Haliburton, Pascal Siakam, and T.J. McConnell, who were sidelined due to injuries, illness, or rest. Coach Rick Carlisle described the situation as "injury management" before the game started. Despite the lack of depth, the Pacers refused to quit, forcing the Hawks to sweat through the final minutes of a contest that looked like a blowout on paper.

A Salary Gap That Should Have Won the Game
Money often dictates performance in professional sports, but Monday night showed that heart can outweigh a payroll. The financial disparity was stark, with the players on the court making a fraction of what their absent teammates earn. NBA dot com's summary of this game paints quite a picture when it comes to the Pacers absences and who was available, according to Peachtree Hoops : "The players who sat out have a combined salary of about $193 million, while those on the court make about $15 million."
This massive gap usually leads to an easy victory for the team with more talent, yet the Hawks had to fight for every point. The Pacers managed to cut a double-digit lead to just two points with 1:36 remaining on the clock. Quenton Jackson played a key role in this late surge, scoring 20 points and hitting a steal and layup to bring Indiana back into contention. The team did not have a single player log fewer than 34 minutes, showing the heavy load carried by the small group.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker Carries the Load
While the Pacers relied on their bench, the Hawks needed a spark to finish the job. Nickeil Alexander-Walker provided that spark by scoring a career-high 34 points and hitting nine three-pointers. He also played critical defense, a dual role that coach Quin Snyder highlighted after the final buzzer. "The thing about Nickeil is he's still playing on the defensive end too," said Snyder postgame.

Atlanta shot 45% from three-point range and 38% from the field overall, but they struggled inside the rim due to missing their own key players. Jalen Johnson was sidelined with an ankle tweak, and Jock Landale also missed the game. Even with these absences, the Hawks managed to hold off the Pacers' relentless pressure. "It's a really good win," said Snyder postgame, acknowledging that the victory was harder than the scoreline suggested.
The Cost of a Back-to-Back
The Pacers were playing the second night of a back-to-back set, which forced them to rest several healthy players like Larry Nance Jr. and Kelly Oubre Jr. Oubre became a late scratch with a bruised knee, adding to the list of unavailable bodies. Indiana has now lost five straight games, dropping their record to 2-6. The team will look to bounce back when they face Memphis on Wednesday.
The Hawks will not have much time to celebrate this narrow victory. They travel to Washington for their next game on Wednesday. The lesson from Monday is clear: a team with limited resources can still cause major trouble if they play with intensity. Carlisle summed up the effort of his shorthanded squad with simple words. "They played their hearts out," Carlisle said.
