The Green Bay Packers will open their 2026 NFL season on the road against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. However, the Packers were forced to part ways with defensive tackle Jaden Crumedy just days before their regular-season opener. The Houston Texans officially signed Crumedy from Green Bay's practice squad directly to their active 53-man roster.

The Packers had already lost nose tackle Nazir Stackhouse to the Tennessee Titans through the waiver process. They brought Crumedy onto the practice squad to help fill that void, but now Crumedy is out the door as well.
The departure creates an opening on Green Bay 's practice squad. The Packers could use the spot to bring back wide receiver Bo Melton , who was released from the 53-man roster on Friday. The team could also evaluate available free-agent defensive linemen as it looks to replenish the practice squad in the coming weeks.

The move came after the Texans placed rookie defensive tackle Kayden McDonald on injured reserve because of an ankle injury after McDonald missed practice on Thursday and Friday. Shortly after making the roster move, Houston announced the signing on social media.
"We have signed Jaden Crumedy and made other roster moves," the team's announcement read .
Houston made the moves two days before the start of the regular season, with McDonald dealing with a sprained ankle. He is required to miss at least four games, including matchups against Buffalo, Cincinnati , Indianapolis and Dallas .
McDonald will be eligible to return against the Tennessee Titans in Week 5. However, his injury has created at least a short-term opportunity for Crumedy. Since he was signed directly from another team's practice squad, Crumedy must remain on the Texans' 53-man roster for at least three weeks.
Crumedy was originally selected by the Carolina Panthers in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft and spent most of the 2025 season on Carolina's practice squad. Across his first two seasons with the Panthers, he appeared in eight games and recorded 15 tackles.
He signed a futures contract with Green Bay in January. Crumedy turned heads with his performance during the preseason, but despite making an impression, he did not make the Packers' initial 53-man roster as Green Bay ultimately faced a numbers crunch during the final roster cuts.
With a crowded defensive line room, the Packers waived Crumedy on August 30 before immediately re-signing him to the practice squad to retain his rights. Now, he has earned a 53-man roster opportunity with the Texans.
