Packers make roster moves with MarShawn Lloyd, Micah Parsons
GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers put edge rusher Micah Parsons on injured reserve and activated running back MarShawn Lloyd from injured reserve to the 53-man roster Dec. 17, according to a source with access to the NFL transaction wire.
The latter move may break the internet given all the interest in the oft-injured Lloyd, but the move is strictly procedural, according to a source.
By putting Lloyd on the 53-man roster, the Packers can put him back on injured reserve with the possibility of activating him after four games. Lloyd suffered a hamstring pull during his 21-day practice window for a potential return that began Dec. 1.
Lloyd was placed on injured reserve/designated to return during training camp, which meant he was eligible to play again as long as he missed four regular-season games. It took until December for him to get healthy, but once the Packers started practicing him, they had three weeks to decide whether to activate him to the 53-man roster.
If they didn’t activate him, he would have been done for the season.
By activating him and then putting him back on injured reserve, he can return after four games. The earliest he would be available would be the second round of the playoffs.
It’s a shot in the dark given Lloyd’s long injury history, but it doesn’t cost the Packers a roster spot or any money. After a day on the 53-man roster, the Packers will place him on injured reserve and can use his spot to activate another designated-to-return player, potentially edge rusher Brenton Cox Jr .
Putting Parsons on injured reserve was expected. He suffered a season-ending torn ACL against the Denver Broncos on Dec. 14 and will have surgery.
