- Packers special teams coach reveals Packers’ confidence level on Trey Smack
Green Bay Packers rookie kicker Trey Smack continues to receive support from special teams coordinator Cam Achord despite his recent struggles.
Achord, who spent four seasons in the same role with the New England Patriots under Bill Belichick, expressed confidence in the young kicker on Tuesday and said he has no concerns about Smack's confidence being shaken by his recent misses.
The Packers ST coordinator made those comments after Smack recorded his eighth missed kick of the season in Green Bay's 27-19 win over the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, October 29. Achord also addressed another costly error from that game, when kick returner Coleman Owen lost a fumble on the opening kickoff.
ESPN's Rob Demovsky shared Achord's remarks on Tuesday, noting that the coach does not believe Trey Smack is allowing his recent misses to affect his confidence or mindset.
"I think that's why we picked him," he remarked.

Achord's comments indicate that Green Bay remains confident Smack can work through his early career struggles. The former Florida kicker has made 11-of-16 field-goal attempts across eight games, putting his conversion rate at 68.8%. He has also connected on 16 of 19 extra-point tries, leaving him with eight missed kicks overall this season.
The Carolina game added another missed kick to Smack's season, as his first-quarter extra-point attempt bounced off the left upright after Love found Kraft for a 12-yard touchdown. He made up for it by successfully converting all three of his remaining tries.

His struggles had been more pronounced the previous week against Detroit. In the Packers' 20-17 loss on October 25, the rookie failed to make a 26-yard field goal and saw his 35-yard attempt blocked. Those misses left him with only one successful conversion from three field-goal attempts.
