The Green Bay Packers have received an injury update that could complicate their preparations for Thursday night's game against the Carolina Panthers, and beyond. One of the team's defensive leaders is dealing with a fracture in his leg, raising questions about his availability as Green Bay looks to bounce back from Sunday's loss to the Detroit Lions.
These are the details.
Green Bay Packers linebacker Zaire Franklin (44) breaks up a pass intended for Chicago Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze (15) on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Packers won the game, 31-7.Tork Mason/Green Bay Press-Gazette
Franklin sustained what the Packers initially described as a shin injury during Thursday's practice. Further information on Monday revealed that he is dealing with a hairline fracture in his leg. Head coach Matt LaFleur said Friday that Franklin is not expected to be placed on injured reserve, indicating the team does not anticipate an absence of four games or more.
While the Packers will have to monitor his recovery, avoiding injured reserve would be an encouraging sign for a defense that has relied heavily on Franklin this season.
Although this is Franklin's first season with the Packers, he has wasted little time establishing himself as an important part of the defense.
Green Bay landed the veteran linebacker from the Indianapolis Colts in an off-season trade. Now in his ninth NFL season, Franklin was elected a defensive captain, a notable distinction for a player in his first year with a new organization.
He has also served as the signal-caller for the defense, helping coordinate the unit on the field.
Franklin ranks third on the team with 41 tackles and has added two quarterback hits, a forced fumble and a pass breakup. His production and leadership have made him an important presence in the middle of Green Bay's defense.
That makes his injury a situation worth watching, even if the current expectation is that he will avoid injured reserve.

Green Bay has little time to recover from Sunday's frustrating loss, with the Panthers scheduled to visit Lambeau Field on Thursday night.
The short turnaround leaves the coaching staff with important decisions to make as the team evaluates Franklin's availability.
Franklin's injury outlook appears more encouraging based on LaFleur's comments about injured reserve.
The Packers will need answers quickly as they prepare for Carolina. With both a defensive leader and a starting offensive lineman dealing with injuries (Sean Rhyan), their status will be an important storyline heading into Thursday night's game.
