The San Diego Padres received encouraging injury updates on catcher Freddy Fermin and right-hander Matt Waldron before the MLB All-Star break. However, San Diego has not announced an activation date for either player.

Fermin has been sidelined since taking a foul ball off his mask during the Padres' July 2 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers . San Diego placed him on the 10-day injured list on July 3 with a head contusion after he had already missed time in June on the concussion IL.
MLB's official Padres injuries and transactions tracker provided the following update on Friday.

"Status: Took a hard foul ball off the mask on July 2, after also missing time in June while on the concussion IL. Cleared concussion protocol this time. Began a rehab stint with Triple-A El Paso on July 8. (Last updated: July 10)"

Fermin's clearance from concussion protocol represents the most encouraging development. He has already resumed game action with Triple-A El Paso, although MLB lists his expected return as late July or August.
Waldron has remained on the 15-day IL since May 15 because of a right brachialis strain. Through a rehab assignment with El Paso, the right-hander has continued to build toward a return.
MLB's official tracker also provided the latest update on Waldron.
"Status: Has made five rehab appearances with Triple-A El Paso, posting a 2.40 ERA. Could be nearing a return — though unclear whether he'd pitch as a starter or in relief. (Last updated: July 10)"

Waldron's flexibility could help a Padres pitching staff dealing with multiple injuries. He has experience working as both a starter and reliever, but San Diego has not publicly determined how it would use him following his activation.
Both updates represent meaningful progress entering the All-Star break, but neither player has an official return date. Fermin still must complete his rehab assignment, while Waldron's activation timeline and role remain uncertain.
