The San Diego Padres have performed well in recent action. They look like a legitimate postseason contender. However, starting pitchers Joe Musgrove and Nick Pivetta remain out with injuries . Musgrove is recovering from Tommy John surgery while Pivetta has been battling right elbow inflammation. According to MLB.com, Musgrove is expected to return in late August or September while Pivetta's expected return is currently listed as "TBD."
San Diego would love to have both pitchers return as soon as possible as the team attempts to reach the postseason. Musgrove has not pitched in an MLB game since 2024, but he is a former All-Star with a proven track record who can give the starting rotation a boost. Pivetta has been limited to only four games pitched this season, but he is another veteran who can help the Padres.
San Diego holds a 66-57 overall record as of this story's writing. The ball club is in second place in the National League West standings, but they still trail the Los Angeles Dodgers by eight games. However, the Padres hold the second NL Wild Card position at the moment.

While a number of teams are still technically in the NL Wild Card conversation, it looks like there will be three teams battling for the final two spots. The Chicago Cubs hold a commanding lead for the top spot. The Padres, Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks are all separated by just one game.
Musgrove and Pivetta could certainly play a role in determining if the Padres make the postseason if they are able to return down the stretch.
