The San Diego Padres were delivered terrible news ahead of their series opener against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night. Luis Rengifo left Saturday night's loss against the Tampa Bay Rays with a knee injury, and it has been confirmed that he tore his ACL .
"MRI revealed a full ACL tear for Luis Rengifo . He's consulting with team docs about plans for surgery and is expected to miss the remainder of the season," said team reporter A.J. Cassavell.
Rengifo started the season with the Milwaukee Brewers , but due to their depth, they moved on from him toward the middle of the season. Three days later, he signed a minor league contract with the Padres and was called up to the major league roster almost right away. From the jump, Rengifo made the Padres a better ball club with his clutch hitting and ability to play all over the diamond.
In 38 games with the Brown & Gold, the utility man hit .291 with a .784 OPS. Rengifo smashed four home runs and drove in 17 runs in 127 at-bats. His WAR reached 1.0, and he was a major reason why the Friars moved into contention in the National League. San Diego is going to be in trouble without the elite play he provided over the last month and a half.
As a result of the injury , the Padres brought back Samad Taylor and Sung-Mun Song to the roster and also placed Gavin Sheets on the IL. Taylor already made headlines over the weekend with his 9th-inning blunder in left field.
