The San Diego Padres have had a great start to their season, starting 19-11, and it may get even better this weekend. A key pitcher will return from the injured list, as they prepare for a three-game set with the Chicago White Sox , according to the Padres’ X account.
“We have reinstated RHP Jeremiah Estrada from the 15-day IL and optioned RHP David Morgan to Triple-A El Paso,” the Padres wrote on X.
This will be a big boon for a bullpen that currently ranks 17th in the majors in team ERA. Mason Miller has been the stopgap in the bullpen , closing the door on teams while leading the Padres with 10 saves. Yet, the middle relief part of the bullpen has needed work, and Estrada’s return will help.
Estrada has not had a great start to his season prior to his injury. He is currently 1-1 with a 5.14 ERA. Yet, before his injury, Estrada had a string of five straight appearances without allowing a run. Before his ailment, he primarily worked as the setup man for Miller, and now will likely resume that role against the Sox this weekend.
The pitching has been up and down. However, it has outperformed the offense, which has struggled to generate runs. Despite the offense struggling, with Fernando Tatis Jr. not clobbering the baseball, the Padres have endured and have been great. Much of this has been because of the Padres’ comeback ability in games this season.
With Estrada back, he will likely slot in this weekend if the Padres were to take a lead late into the game against the Sox. If he is healthy, he could help the bullpen become a strength again.
