Padres rumors: The pitcher San Diego is more likely to trade for than Tarik Skubal, Joe Ryan appeared first on ClutchPoints . Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
While the San Diego Padres ' 44-46 record puts them 15 games out of the NL West lead, they're only 4.5 games out of a Wild Card spot. With a roster built to win now, the Padres may be inclined to add further at the trade deadline.
Making a massive swing for Tarik Skubal or Joe Ryan would show San Diego is serious about their World Series aspirations . But as Jim Bowden of the Athletic sees it, a trade for Freddy Peralta of the New York Mets seems much more likely .
"Rather than swing for Skubal or Ryan, the Padres are more likely to take a chance they can get Peralta back on track, given that the prospect price to acquire him will be much lower than it was before the season," Bowden wrote.

The Mets are even more down bad than the Padres, holding a 38-53 record entering Tuesday. Furthermore, Peralta is set to be a free agent after the season. New York won't just give him away, but he'll be significantly easier to acquire than Skubal or Ryan.
That doesn't mean he wouldn't be an asset in their playoff push. Peralta does own a 4.68 ERA and a 98/39 K/BB ratio over his first 19 starts with the Mets. But the right-hander was an All-Star in 2025 after posting a 2.70 ERA and 204/66 K/BB ratio. His nine years total in the league have produce two All-Star nominations, alongside a 3.69 ERA and 1,251/399 K/BB ratio.
With the Mets continuing to spiral, it seems increasingly likely that Peralta will be dealt. With the Padres in need of pitching and still trying to make the playoffs, San Diego could be the perfect trade match.
