Padres urged to trade Mason Miller amid disappointing season by MLB Insider appeared first on ClutchPoints . Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
The San Diego Padres face a difficult MLB trade deadline question, and Mason Miller now sits at the center of it. Despite Miller's dominant season, Steve Phillips believes San Diego should use its bullpen strength to address larger roster issues.
Miller has given the Padres one of baseball's most overpowering late-inning weapons. However, San Diego sits in a troubling position at 44-46, third in the NL West, 14.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers , and 1-9 over its last 10 games. That slide makes the deadline debate even more complicated.
The bullpen gives the club a clear surplus, but Miller represents the most valuable trade chip San Diego could move for immediate help. If the Padres want to change their trajectory before the deadline, Phillips believes they should consider a dramatic move.

MLB Now took to X, formerly Twitter, and shared Phillips' direct answer on whether the Padres should seriously consider trading Miller.
"Should the Padres trade Mason Miller
?
@StevePhillipsGM: 'Yes, they should.'"
In the MLB Now clip, MLB Network Radio's Steve Phillips expanded on why San Diego should consider moving its flame-throwing closer:
"They need starting pitching and offense. Okay, their surplus is bullpen, and Mason Miller is the biggest chip that they have. And there is a team in the Bronx that would desperately give up what it would take to get him… I'm telling you right now, the Padres have to do that if they want to try to get back in it this year."
Phillips' argument is strong because Miller's value is still enormous . The right-hander owns a 0.98 ERA with 22 saves and 67 strikeouts across 36.2 innings, production that would interest any contender searching for a shutdown reliever.
Still, an elite closer only changes so much if the Padres cannot consistently build leads. That reality makes Miller both a luxury and a possible solution.
For the Padres, the question now centers on urgency. Keeping Miller protects the ninth, but trading him could help address the rotation, lineup, and deadline path at once.
