The Carolina Panthers have brought back a familiar face (and a speedy pair of legs) this afternoon.
As announced on Tuesday, the team has signed wideout Ihmir Smith-Marsette to their practice squad. The 27-year-old receiver and return specialist spent the 2023 campaign as a member of the Panthers.
That season saw Smith-Marsette appear in a career-high 17 games. He recorded eight receptions for 51 yards and a league-leading 37 punt returns for 322 yards and a touchdown.
Smith-Marsette's last regular-season appearance came for the New York Giants in 2024, where he fielded 29 punts for 228 return yards.
After parting ways with wideout Jimmy Horn Jr. , the Panthers turned to fellow receiver Jalen Coker as their punt returner in Week 2 —where he brought back a pair of punts for a total of 49 yards. Smith-Marsette could give Carolina another option in that role.
To make room on the practice squad for Smith-Marsette, the team released rookie wide receiver E.J. Williams—who was added last week .
