The 2027 NFL Draft feels like forever away, and we're all caught up in the start of the NFL season. Regardless, it's never too early to look ahead to the Draft. This weekly series will take a closer look at some of the prospects the Carolina Panthers could select in the 2027 iteration of the Draft. In this series, we'll only be looking at prospects the Panthers could seriously consider. This week our profile will focus on Indiana Hoosiers cornerback Jamari Sharpe
Sharpe (6'1", 187 lbs.) was a speedster wide receiver and track star in Miami, FL before finally switching to corner his senior year of high school. The nephew of former NFL corner Glenn Sharpe, was only a three star recruit and signed with Indiana, redshirting his freshman season in 2022. As a redshirt freshman, he broke into the starting lineup for most games. The following season saw the Hoosiers hire Curt Cignetti, and Sharpe's role on the defense dwindled. Despite the fewer snaps, there was a noticeable jump in Sharpe's technique and understanding of the defensive concepts. Last season, Sharpe won the starting corner spot opposite D'Angelo Ponds (who was a second round pick in last year's Draft). Including Indiana's bowl games, Sharpe tallied 50 tackles, six for loss, six passes defended, a fumble recovery, and a National Championship sealing interception against Miami. He has continued to play well this season despite missing a game early in the year due to injury.
Sharpe's biggest strength is his zone coverage. He does an excellent job of reading the quarterback's eyes and driving on throws with his elite athleticism. His track star speed allows him to be more patient because he is confident in his recovery on downfield throws. His improved technique under Cignetti goes beyond just coverage, as his tackling has become a lot more consistent (only charged with four missed tackles in 2025). His size/speed combination is exactly what NFL defenses look for in an outside corner.
Sharpe's production has not matched his coverage ability, leading some scouts to be a bit wary. He only intercepted one pass through the entirety of Indiana's championship run, and that one came at the very end of the Championship Game. While he has been able to force several fumbles, his run defense is average at best. He's a willing run defender, but isn't a game changer on the outside.
Jamari Sharpe is a rangy zone corner with the size and speed to be effective at the next level. His growth under Curt Cignetti demonstrates a coachability and desire to improve that defensive staffs will love. Starting all 16 games for a national championship team will be looked upon highly as well. While his man coverage skills lag behind his elite zone skills, he does well enough to stay on the field regardless of the coverage called. A team like the Panthers, who run a lot of off zone coverage, would be a perfect fit for Sharpe. Ejiro Evero's defense (if he is still the DC next season) would allow Sharpe to use his eyes and speed to their fullest advantage.
What do you think, Panthers fans? If Jamari Sharpe is available when the Panthers select in the 2027 NFL Draft, should they take him? Sound off in the comments!
