The Kansas City Chiefs will fight to regain their dominance during the 2026 NFL season. It all starts with QB Patrick Mahomes , who tore his ACL late in the 2025 season. Kansas City’s franchise quarterback certainly sounds like he is well on his way to being completely healthy before the fall.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler shared an encouraging update on Mahomes’ relentless rehab process after the Chiefs began Phase Three of OTAs.
“He is ahead of schedule. Source I talked to said that he’s been rehabbing like a maniac in Kansas City. Sometimes he spends the offseason, or parts of it, in Texas throwing with his receivers or back home. He’s been in Kansas City for the majority of this time to really dig into the rehab. He’s in there every day, six to seven hours getting after it.”
Mahomes got Chiefs fans excited after posting a clip of himself throwing passes at OTAs on Tuesday. That’s a good sign, but Fowler explained that mobility is the next big step for Mahomes.
“I’m told the next step is the cutting part,” Fowler added. “That’s where he’s got to get comfortable. He’s been throwing off and on for really the last month or so. Cutting is a big one.”
Back in January, Mahomes set the ambitious goal of being ready for Week 1 of the 2026 season. By all accounts, he is still charging towards that goal at full speed.
“Still looking at Week 1, he’s got to prove it over time,” Fowler concluded. “They have to clear him and all that stuff. But his goal has not changed I’m told, Week 1 is the goal.”
It will be interesting to see how agile Mahomes looks during training camp later this summer.
