The New England Patriots announced on Friday that they have released undrafted rookie defensive tackle Travis Shaw .
It's a move that came nearly a week before the team is scheduled to hold its first training camp practice of the year. Shaw spent time at Texas and North Carolina during his college tenure as a rotational player. In 50 game appearances, he has racked up 68 tackles, 6.5 tackles for a loss, four passes defended and two fumble recoveries.
The odds of Shaw making the final roster were slim given the depth New England currently has along the defensive front. Milton Williams and Christian Barmore serve as the top two options for the team.
However, the Patriots also have underrated depth with the likes of Cory Durden , Joshua Farmer , Leonard Taylor III , Jeremiah Pharms Jr. and Eric Gregory also on the roster.
With the move, the Patriots now have an open spot on their roster ahead of training camp, meaning a corresponding move should be expected soon.
