John Saunders Jr. apparently understood the assignment this summer. When competing for a roster spot, take the football away so frequently that the coaching staff becomes unable to ignore you.

Saunders has recorded five interceptions since the start of the New England Patriots ' offseason program, establishing himself as one of the biggest surprises on the roster. His performance earned him a place on Sports Illustrated's latest 53-man roster projection .
The projection had Saunders joining Kevin Byard , Craig Woodson , Dell Pettus and newly acquired Jaylen Reed at safety. It also described the second-year defender as someone who "can't be left off the roster." Five interceptions tend to have that effect.

Saunders Has Taken Advantage Of Every Opportunity
Saunders initially joined the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2024. He later spent time on the Atlanta Falcons ' practice squad before signing with New England 's practice squad last October.

The Patriots gave him a reserve/future contract in January, providing another opportunity to compete during the offseason.
Saunders has turned that opportunity into a summer-long audition tape. His five interceptions include three during organized team activities and minicamp. He continued making plays after the pads came on, proving his early production was not merely the result of quarterbacks experimenting during spring practices.
The recent addition of Reed complicated the safety competition. New England acquired Reed and a 2027 sixth-round pick from the Houston Texans in exchange for receiver Kayshon Boutte and a 2027 seventh-round selection. Reed offers experience in the slot and on special teams, potentially squeezing another defensive back off the roster.
Saunders has responded by making himself difficult to sacrifice. His ball production provides an element that NFL teams constantly chase and rarely discard willingly.

There still is one preseason game remaining, and no roster spot at the bottom of the depth chart is completely secure.
Saunders, however, has followed the simplest possible strategy for an unheralded player trying to stick around: Keep taking the ball away until cutting him begins to look ridiculous.
So far, it has worked.
