One of New England’s captains was injured early in the AFC Championship Game.
Linebacker Robert Spillane hurt his ankle while tackling Broncos running back R.J. Harvey with 3:37 remaining in the first quarter.
Spillane stayed down after the play and slammed his helmet on the Mile High grass . He was examined in the blue medical tent and then went to the locker room. The Patriots said he was questionable to return.
An important piece of New England ’s defense, Spillane battled foot and ankle injuries late in the season, missing the team’s final four regular season games. Strong in both on the Patriots’ playoff games, Spillane had been relishing his return to the lineup.
“I love being out there,” Spillane said earlier this month. “Any chance I get to step out on the field with the guys. Part of it is special, and I don’t take those opportunities for granted. Anyone that steps out there, it feels like a brotherhood. You’re playing for your brothers. You’re playing for so much, our family, your children.”
