A Patriots executive could be in line for a new gig soon, according to Sports Illustrated .
Ryan Cowden, who currently holds the title of VP of player personnel in New England , appeared in the “closing in” section of Albert Breer’s list of future general managers.
“He followed Mike Vrabel to New England, after two years under Joe Schoen with the Giants—and has since helped orchestrate a mind-bending Patriots turnaround alongside de facto GM Eliot Wolf," Breer writes. “Cowden’s voice has been invaluable in helping bring Vrabel’s vision to life, as the personnel department overhauled the roster around star quarterback Drake Maye.
“Cowden is widely seen by those who’ve worked with him as an elite talent evaluator. If a team in the Southeast like the Falcons or the Dolphins come calling, it’d be pretty easy to see a fit for a guy who’s spent most of his career with the Panthers and Titans.”
The 47-year-old has been working in front offices since 2000, starting in Carolina as a scouting assistant and spending his first 16 seasons there as he worked his way up the ladder. In 2016, Cowden went to Tennessee as their director of player personnel and served as interim general manager in 2022.
Cowden spent 2023-24 in New York as an executive advisor to Giants general manager Joe Schoen. When the Patriots landed Cowden last winter, Schoen also raved about what the exec could do when it comes to assessing talent.
“You’re getting a hard worker, you’re getting a good leader, you’re getting a hell of an evaluator,” Schoen said at the NFL Combine. “A really good move by Coach Vrabel and the Patriots to come after Ryan. He’s going to do a good job.”
