The Patriots just pulled a smart roster move that keeps a key player close without wasting a spot on the active list. New England brought back outside linebacker Jose Ramirez to the practice squad after he cleared waivers on Wednesday. This quick turnaround shows the team values his specific skills, especially after he helped in the recent win over Buffalo.
A Smart Roster Shuffle
ESPN's Mike Reiss reported the news first, noting the specific timing of the return. "With OLB Jose Ramirez clearing waivers today, he is signing back to the Patriots practice squad, per a source," Reiss wrote. The team released him just two days prior to open a spot, but no other club wanted him. Now, they keep a former MAC Defensive Player of the Year in the fold while saving a roster slot. That is exactly how a smart front office handles depth.

Ramirez played 30 total snaps in his last two games, proving he can step in when needed. He logged 22 of those snaps on special teams, accounting for 58% of the unit's workload in the 29-26 victory over the Bills. His ability to contribute immediately makes him a valuable asset, even if he stays off the main roster. The Patriots need that kind of versatility as they prepare for a tough divisional rival.

Defensive Depth Matters Now
The timing is perfect because the defense is dealing with some serious injury issues heading into Sunday. Christian Gonzalez remains out with a shoulder injury, and the team only had three cornerbacks practice this week. With the Raiders coming to Gillette Stadium, New England needs every healthy body they can get. Ramirez brings a track record of production that the current roster lacks.
Before joining the Patriots, Ramirez set a school record with 12 sacks at Eastern Michigan. He spent time with the Buccaneers and played in the CFL before landing in New England. His college stats show he has the raw talent to be a pass rusher, even if his NFL time has been limited. The coaching staff clearly sees that potential and wants to develop it without risking an active spot.
Coach Mike Vrabel knows the Raiders offense loves to run the ball to set up their playmakers. "The (Raiders) offense really stays committed to what they want to do, which is run the football to find their playmakers," Vrabel said prior to practice. Having a linebacker who can fill gaps and make plays on special teams is crucial against a team that sits at 3-1. The move to bring Ramirez back was not a panic reaction; it was a calculated step to fix a hole.

Drake Maye just earned AFC Offensive Player of the Week, but he has struggled with turnovers. This is a big game that would allow fans to forgive the Pats for their blunder against Jacksonville.
