The Miami Dolphins are making a change at quarterback ahead of Week 16.
Tua Tagovailoa was benched in favor of rookie Quinn Ewers . The move comes after the Dolphins were officially eliminated from the playoffs with a Week 15 against the Pittsburgh Steelers .
“Naturally, I’d say I’m disappointed. It’s a normal human emotion,” Tagovailoa told reporters on Wednesday . “Outside of that, I gotta do my part, my role here right now is to help whoever the quarterback is going to be for this team, to lead this team, help him in whatever way I can to help the team win this game on Sunday.”
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel hinted earlier this week a change could be coming. Tagovailoa has struggled all season and put up only 65 passing yards and an interception with two sacks that ended drives through three quarters.
The quarterback’s 15 interceptions leads the NFL.
Ewers was drafted by Miami in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He’ll make his NFL debut against the Joe Burrow-led Cincinnati Bengals .
“I think Quinn gives this team the best chance to win. Our focus is to win the next three games” McDaniel told reporter, before later adding , ”I’m looking for conviction in quarterback play. Understanding that he is a rookie, I felt that he would play the position the most convicted.
It’s unclear if the Dolphins want to move on from Tagovailoa after this season or continue to stick with him. The 27-year-old signed a four-year, $212 million contract with the Dolphins in 2024 that has $167 million guaranteed.
