FOXBOROUGH - Milton Williams was ruled out of Sunday’s game with the Jets , but the Patriots star, whose practice window opened for a return off IR, believes he’ll see game action soon.
“I’m definitely close,” Williams told MassLive Friday. “I’m not all the way there yet, but it’s getting real close.”
Williams, who has been on IR since suffering an ankle injury against the Jets during the Patriots Week 13 game at Gillette Stadium, indicated there was a conversation with the coaching staff on whether he would be activated for this week’s Jets game or not.
They chose the latter.
“They ended up making the final decision based on how things went at practice,” Williams said. “So we’re going to try again next week and see how much it progresses then. So, we’ll see.”
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said with the holiday, it was a tough week to get the best evaluation on his team’s star defender and top run stopper.
“I think he’s working hard. I would say that it’d be tough to see a lot just from the way that the practices were structured,” Vrabel said, “but he’s working hard to get back, and again, it’s good to see him out there with the team. That’s just the first step of it.”
Williams, who was signed during the offseason to a $104 million contract, was just glad to be back on the field, working toward a return.
“It just felt good to get back out there. Practicing a little bit, moving around. Leaning on a couple of the guys, getting some of the O-linemen to try to block (me),” he said. “But it just felt good to get out there and moving around.”
