The New England Patriots made a bold move on Tuesday by releasing cornerback Kindle Vildor and activating offensive tackle Marcus Bryant. This swap signals a clear shift in priorities as the team prepares for a tough matchup against the Green Bay Packers. Per Pats Pulpit , the decision to cut a veteran who played 13 snaps on special teams against the Miami Dolphins was a surprise to many fans. Yet the move opens a spot for a player the team knows they need up front.
Protecting the Quarterback Takes Priority
The Patriots now have five players ready to play at offensive tackle, including the returning Bryant. According to Sports Illustrated , Bryant was a seventh-round pick a season ago who missed time due to an ankle injury. Just before his 21-day activation window ended on Wednesday, he has now returned. This timing is no accident. The team wants depth behind starters Will Campbell and Morgan Moses to keep Drake Maye safe from sacks.

Per the New England Patriots official announcement, Bryant was originally placed on injured reserve on Aug. 30 after suffering an injury in the preseason. His return allows the team to use Caleb Lomu as an emergency interior lineman if needed. That is a huge plus for an offensive line that has shown promise but still needs reliability. The roster now lists five tackles: Campbell, Moses, Lomu, Dametrious Crownover, and Bryant. This depth chart looks much stronger than it did a week ago.
Why Vildor Lost His Spot
Kindle Vildor played in five games for New England this season and recorded six tackles. He also had one pass defensed and one forced fumble during his time with the team. Despite these stats, the 29-year-old veteran was released on Tuesday. Per Pats Pulpit, Vildor was part of the game day roster against the Dolphins as the fifth cornerback, while rookies Karon Prunty and Channing Canada were healthy scratches. The fact that the veterans got the axe while the rookies stayed is a clear message from the coaching staff.
During his first year with New England, Vildor moved back and forth between the practice squad and the 53-man roster. He was signed on March 23, 2026, after playing for teams like the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now he is gone. The Patriots seem to believe that the younger corners or the return of other veterans like Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis make Vildor expendable. The team clearly wants to invest in the offensive line rather than keep a backup corner who has limited impact.

One Spot Left for Mack Hollins
Following these moves, a single open spot remains on the 53-man roster. According to Sports Illustrated, that spot could potentially go to wide receiver Mack Hollins or fullback Reggie Gilliam. Both players are eligible to return off injured reserve this week. Hollins was a key target in training camp before injuries sidelined him. Bringing him back would give the offense another reliable option in the passing game. The team has already used two of its eight allowed return spots, so they have plenty of room left to bring back talent.
The Patriots are 5-3 and heading into a critical game on Sunday, Nov. 8 at Gillette Stadium. The Packers will test this revamped offensive line, so having Bryant back is essential. The move to cut Vildor shows the team is willing to make tough choices to get better. They are building a roster that can compete for a playoff spot. The clock is ticking, but the Patriots are moving fast to get it done.
