FOXBOROUGH – Hunter Henry has been a reliable security blanket for Drake Maye all season long.
That’s why it wasn’t a surprise when Maye threw the ball to his tight end during a crucial play on Sunday on third-and-12. And that’s why it was a surprise when the ball sailed through the outstretched hands of the veteran.
On Sunday, the Patriots and Bills swapped the lead multiple times in the fourth quarter. After Buffalo took a 35-31 edge, the Patriots ’ offense had a chance to respond. Following a sack, the Patriots were backed up when Maye’s pass to Henry was nearly complete.
The pass was a little high, but catchable. After the game, the captain said that it was his fault.
“Oh, I should’ve caught it,” Henry said. “That’s on me. I’ve got to be better. That’s a crucial situation. I’ve got to make that.”
After a first half, where they led 24-7, nothing went right for the Patriots in the second half on Sunday. Mike Vrabel’s team was outscored 28-7 in the final two quarters .
The team struggled in all three phases. On special teams, they allowed multiple big returns. On defense, they allowed five-straight touchdowns. On offense, there was an interception, multiple penalties, sacks, and then Henry dropped a would-be third-down conversion.
Henry is having one of the best seasons of his career. He came into this matchup second on the team with 45 catches, 610 yards, and five touchdowns.
“We’ve just got to make plays and do our jobs,” Henry said. “That is what it is – stay ahead of the chains. Offensively, I can speak on that. And just try to keep the ball and move the ball. We were able to do that in the second half. It’s disappointing.”
