The New Orleans Pelicans were on the search for a new head coach right after their season ended, and there was one name that continued to pop up. Though he was still coaching the Orlando Magic at the time, it seemed as if Jamahl Mosley was their top candidate in the event that he was fired.
Everything panned out in the Pelicans' favor, and weeks later, they were able to get their guy .
"BREAKING: The New Orleans Pelicans are hiring Jamahl Mosley as the franchise's new head coach on a five-year contract, sources tell ESPN. Mosley accepts the Pelicans job after five seasons in Orlando where he guided the Magic to three consecutive playoff berths," ESPN's Shams Charania wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The Pelicans reportedly kept in contact with Mosley ever since he parted ways with the Magic, and they met in person at the NBA draft combine in Chicago .
"The Pelicans believe the franchise is at a point similar to Mosley's leadership and development plan when he took over the rebuilding Magic in 2021 after a 21-win season," Charania wrote. "It led to season-by-season improvement, then playoff appearances. In Orlando, Mosley built teams anchored by strong defenses, with the Magic ranked No. 3 overall in 2023-24 and No. 2 overall in 2024-25."
Mosley led the Magic to the playoffs the past three seasons, but they were eliminated in the first round all three times.
The Pelicans are looking to find success for the present and future, and they have the talent on the roster to do so. When the team was healthy toward the end of the season, they started to win a few games, and the hope is that they can bring that over to next season.
Mosley should be the right person to get the most out of them, and his resume over the past few years shows it.
