While the Penguins lost against the Jets on Monday night, Sergei Murashov looked sharp in his first start of the season. The hope is he can adapt and prove he's the franchise's future goalie.
The 22-year-old Russian had 31 saves against Winnipeg. Two goals against him came from ricocheted shots off his teammates. All three goals, including a shot from Cole Perfetti, came in the third.
Despite the loss, Murashov showed signs of brilliance. Early in the first, he lunged across the crease and moved side to side to block shot attempts. It was a confidence-building outing as Pittsburgh looks to give him more reps by the net.
"I'll come back to tomorrow with a clear mind, quiet mind, rested mind... Every kid dreams of getting here [to the NHL], and you just appreciate every day here," Murashov said postgame.
"There's a saying in Russian: 'Morning is wiser than evening.' So, just take a good sleep, rest, and calmly think about that tomorrow, so we can get better from this game. There's always something good, and there's always something to improve there."
Picked in the 2022 NHL Draft, Murashov had 12 wins in 16 games for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins during the 2024-25 season. In 38 games during the 2025-26 season, he had 24 wins and a goals against average (GAA) mark of 2.20.
Showcasing his potential in the AHL, he had one win in five games in Pittsburgh last year.
On the roster early this season, Murashov is sharing the goalie position with Arturs Silovs. However, he could take over if he continues to entertain and deliver performances like he did against the Jets.
