Pittsburgh Penguins president/general manager Kyle Dubas is diving into an important offseason. On Thursday, he signed forward Connor Dewar and defeseman Ilya Solovyov to contract extensions. Both were slated to become unrestricted free agents.
Dewar, 26, signed a two-year extension, through 2027-28, with an AAV of $2.25 million, a raise over his $1.1 million in 2025-26. He is coming off a career year with 14 goals, 16 assists, 30 points and a plus-minus of plus-16 that led the team's forwards. He also had two goals in six playoff games.
He was part of a highly effective fourth line and a key penalty killer on a unit that ranked sixth in the NHL.
Solovyov, 25, who was acquired during the season from Columbus, signed a one-year extension with an $850,000 AAV, up from $775,000. He had a goal and two assists in 14 games with the Penguins. Whether he might be a depth player next season or something more will probably depend on how the rest of the offseason unfolds.
Neither signing is a surprise, as both players are young and represent potential cogs for the coming seasons during a push to get the Penguins back to contender status after they broke their three-year playoff drought — only to lose to Philadelphia in the first round.
There is no word on the biggest pending free agent on the roster, forward Evgeni Malkin .
Dubas is scheduled to speak to reporters next week.
