There appears to be an developing stand-off between Pep Guardiola and the agent of Manchester City talent Claudio Echeverri , according to reports.
Despite City outlining a clear development plan for the Argentine starlet, tensions around his immediate future have increased sharply in recent weeks. The midfielder's continued lack of minutes at Bayer Leverkusen , coupled with growing reports from South America of his desire to return to River Plate, has placed fresh pressure on Etihad decision-makers.
Pep Guardiola himself has already alluded to frustration with the involvement of Echeverri's representatives, and the situation now looks set to become a defining storyline of the upcoming January window.
Echeverri's loan to Leverkusen was initially intended to be the first major step in adapting him to elite European football, but the reality has fallen short. With the player accumulating barely over two hours of action in the Bundesliga and indications that he feels the move has hindered rather than advanced his development, speculation around an early recall has intensified.
This follows a series of recent reports including claims that the 19-year-old is eyeing a return to River Plate or a fresh loan to another European club – all pointing towards uncertainty that Manchester City did not anticipate so soon.
Now, according to the information of ESPN's Javier Gil Navarro , Pep Guardiola does not want Claudio Echeverri to return to River Plate in January, and will 'not accept orders or wishes' to return temporarily to the Argentine giants.
Having already been openly critical of the player's agent during a recent press conference, it is claimed that Guardiola believes the Argentine's representative pulled for the player to join Bayer Leverkusen on loan, ignoring the Catalan's suggestion of Girona .
It is suggested that 'in a few days', the 'end of this story will be known' with the January transfer window rapidly approaching.
What emerges next will likely depend on whether Bayer Leverkusen can provide assurances over Echeverri's playing time before the window opens. Should minutes remain limited, City may activate the recall clause they inserted into the summer agreement.
However, even if a recall emerges, a return to River remains highly unlikely given Guardiola's clear objections and the club's wider strategic plan. Instead, Girona once again stands out as the most logical alternative.
The Catalan side were heavily interested during the summer and fit City's preferred model. Echeverri himself was reportedly keen on the move before his agent steered him towards Leverkusen – a decision that has now become a focal point of Pep Guardiola's frustration.
With January fast approaching, Echeverri's situation appears to be building toward a decisive point. Whether the player's agent attempt to force a move, or City take full control of the process, next steps will define the trajectory of one of the club's most highly-rated talents.
