Pep Guardiola offered a frank assessment of Jose Mourinho's tactical thinking after watching Benfica's dramatic Champions League win over Real Madrid .
The extraordinary finish to the match drew attention across Europe, not only because of how it ended, but because of the broader implications it carried for qualification positions elsewhere.
Guardiola addressed the moment as a neutral observer who had watched events unfold elsewhere in the competition.

In comments reported by The Independent , Guardiola explained how the situation appeared from the outside as Benfica pushed for a decisive late goal against Real Madrid.
"Of course. We were all there. We didn't know that Benfica needed a goal to qualify. So when their goalkeeper goes up, we said, 'why you go'? But it was a good strategy for Jose, right? To score the fourth goal," the Manchester City boss said.
The remarks made clear that the decision initially looked puzzling to those watching, before the wider context became apparent.
Guardiola framed the move as a calculated response to the qualification picture, crediting Mourinho for understanding exactly what was required in that moment.
The Benfica result also carried consequences beyond that match, helping shape the final Champions League table and benefiting clubs elsewhere, including Manchester City.
Guardiola acknowledged that broader picture while reflecting on City's own position in the competition.
"There are a lot of things to improve but we are really pleased to finish top eight, considering how [tough] the Champions League has become," he continued.
Pep concluded stating: "When I started 16 or 17 years ago, the Champions League was a different type of competition than today. Every team is really, really, really, really, really tough.
"We're really pleased to not play one knockout stage. Hopefully, we can arrive in March at our best."
The comments underlined Guardiola's belief that modern Champions League progression is shaped as much by events elsewhere as by performances in isolation.
For City, watching the drama unfold from a distance ultimately reinforced how fine the margins have become at the highest level.
