Pete Alonso made more history during his first season with the Baltimore Orioles , reaching the 40-home run mark for the fourth time in his career.
Alonso hit his 39th and 40th homers during Tuesday's matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays , driving in three runs during Baltimore's 4-3 victory. The performance also placed him in a rare group of power hitters who have reached 40 home runs in their first season with multiple franchises.
According to MLB researcher Sarah Langs, Alonso is the fourth player in MLB history to accomplish the feat. He joins Nelson Cruz , Juan Soto and Jim Thome.
Alonso previously reached the mark during his first season with the New York Mets in 2019. That year, he hit a rookie-record 53 home runs, establishing himself as one of the league's most dangerous power hitters.
The milestone adds to an impressive debut season in Baltimore. Alonso entered Tuesday batting .265 with 40 home runs and 108 RBIs through 157 games, according to the supplied season statistics.
The Orioles signed Alonso to a five-year, $155 million contract during the offseason, hoping his power would anchor the middle of their lineup. His latest performance gave Baltimore another important offensive contribution during the final week of the regular season.

Baltimore entered Tuesday at 76-81 and remained in the American League Wild Card hunt. The Orioles have faced several roster challenges, including Jackson Holliday 's wrist injury and Tyler O'Neill's move to the 60-day injured list.
The team also received a boost when closer Félix Bautista returned from the injured list earlier in September. With the season nearing its conclusion, Alonso's production remains central to Baltimore's efforts to stay in contention.
