Phil Kessel Headlines US 2026 Hockey Hall of Fame Class
It's been a while since Phil Kessel hung up his skates, but the hockey world got a nice reminder this week of just how remarkable his career truly was. The man who was once the subject of hot dog memes and endless Toronto media scrutiny is now officially headed to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame as part of the 2026 class, and honestly, it's hard to argue he doesn't belong there.
USA Hockey announced Thursday that Kessel will be inducted alongside his sister Amanda, fellow NHLers T.J. Oshie and Ryan Suter , and longtime athletic trainer Stan Wong. The ceremony is scheduled for November 30 in Washington, D.C.

The Career That Earned Phil His Place
Phil Kessel's journey to this moment was anything but ordinary. Coming out of Madison, Wisconsin, he spent one season at the University of Minnesota, putting up 51 points in 39 games as a freshman before being taken fifth overall by the Boston Bruins in the 2006 NHL Draft. His rookie year was defined by something far bigger than hockey, though. Diagnosed with testicular cancer in December 2006, Kessel battled back to play 70 games that season and became the first rookie ever to win the Bill Masterton Trophy for perseverance and dedication to the game.
From there, his durability became the stuff of legend. Starting on November 3, 2009, Kessel played in 1,064 consecutive regular season games, an NHL record that surpassed Keith Yandle 's previous mark of 989. That iron man streak stretched across stints with the Maple Leafs , Pittsburgh Penguins , Arizona Coyotes, and Vegas Golden Knights , finally ending only when his career did.
Of course, the numbers tell a pretty compelling story on their own. Over 17 NHL seasons, Kessel racked up 992 points on 413 goals and 579 assists in 1,286 regular season games. He added another 83 points in 100 playoff contests. His six seasons in Toronto were arguably his individual peak, even if the team success wasn't there. It wasn't until he landed in Pittsburgh that the hardware started piling up. As part of the famous "HBK Line" with Carl Hagelin and Nick Bonino , Kessel led the Penguins with 10 goals and 22 points in 24 playoff games during the 2016 Stanley Cup run. He followed that up with 23 points in 25 games when Pittsburgh repeated as champions in 2017. And for good measure, he picked up a third ring with Vegas in 2023, capping off his career with a total of three Stanley Cup titles.

On the international stage, Kessel represented the United States at two Winter Olympics. He helped the U.S. earn a silver medal at the 2010 Vancouver Games and was named the tournament's best forward at the 2014 Sochi Olympics after leading the Americans with five goals and eight points in six games.
"Obviously, this is a great honor," Kessel said upon learning of his induction. "I loved playing for USA Hockey over the years, enjoyed my time, enjoyed all the friends I made."
A Stacked Class Joining Him
What makes this class particularly special is the family connection. Phil and Amanda Kessel will become just the second brother-sister pair inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, following Cammi and Tony Granato. Amanda's resume is nothing short of incredible in its own right. She won three NCAA championships at the University of Minnesota, captured the Patty Kazmaier Award in 2013, and represented the U.S. at three Olympics, including the gold medal run in 2018. She also won four IIHF Women's World Championship golds and has since transitioned into management with the Pittsburgh Penguins organization.

Phil acknowledged the competitive fire that drove both siblings. "We were competitive from a young age, obviously, and I think that kind of pushed us along," he said, also giving credit to their brother Blake, who was an All-American at the University of New Hampshire.
T.J. Oshie brings his own memorable resume to the class. Beyond his 695 points in 1,010 NHL games and a Stanley Cup with Washington in 2018, Oshie will forever be remembered for his electric shootout performance against Russia at the 2014 Olympics, where he scored four times on six attempts. Ryan Suter, meanwhile, was a defensive workhorse across 1,526 regular season games and 20 NHL seasons, the second-highest total among American-born defensemen behind only Chris Chelios. His induction also carries deep family significance, as his late father Bob was enshrined as part of the 1980 Miracle on Ice team, and his uncle Gary was inducted in 2011.
Rounding out the class, Stan Wong's decades of service as an athletic trainer for USA Hockey at countless international tournaments earned him a well-deserved spot alongside the players he helped keep on the ice.
USA Hockey president Mike Trimboli summed it up well: "You don't have to look far in our sport to find someone whose life was touched by one of these five. Their extraordinary contributions will be felt for generations to come." For Phil Kessel, the hot dog jokes can live on forever, but so will a legacy that now includes a place among the all-time greats of American hockey.
