The Philadelphia Phillies have made an addition to their bullpen before Tuesday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates .
Today, the NL East club announced that right-hander Chase Shugart was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Taking Shugart's place on the active roster is Lou Trivino .
This is Trivino's second Major League stint with the organization after appearing in 10 games with the Phillies in 2025, allowing two earned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts compared to five walks in nine innings.
A veteran of seven years, the 34-year-old Trivino was a key piece of the Athletics ' bullpen when they were still in Oakland.
During his rookie year in 2018, the righty posted a 143 ERA+ while striking out 27.4% of the batters he faced.
After leaving the A's, he bounced around to the New York Yankees , San Francisco Giants , and Los Angeles Dodgers .
Trivino began 2026 with the Baltimore Orioles , pitching in just two games. Shortly after, he elected free agency after clearing waivers.
He did not pitch in 2024 after suffering a right elbow sprain in spring training that required Tommy John Surgery.
In all likelihood, the Phillies manager Don Mattingly will use Trivino in low-leverage situations and to eat innings in games that get out of hand.
