The Philadelphia Phillies earned a 3-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday in the first matchup of a doubleheader. It came down to the bottom of the ninth with the game tied, but it all ended after Justin Crawford recorded his second career walk-off.
Crawford, who is 22 years old, hit a ground ball toward Giants shortstop Willy Ademas. The runner on third sprinted toward home plate to record the run, while Crawford beat out the throw at first base. It was an impressive walk-off, as the Phillies' rookie outfielder showed off blazing speed to help secure the win.
Impressively enough, Crawford becomes the first player to record multiple walk-off RBIs at just 22 years old in the past 50 years in Phillies' history, per Sarah Langs of MLB.com. The other player to achieve that feat at that young an age was Scott Rolen.
"Phillies with multiple walk-off RBI at age 22 or younger, last 50 years: Justin Crawford, Scott Rolen," claimed Langs.
The victory is the second for the Phillies since firing Rob Thomson as manager and replacing him with Don Mattingly. Furthermore, the win clinches the series against the Giants, as the club is 2-0 heading into Game 3 at 5:35 p.m. EST on Thursday. The last time Philadelphia won a series this season came in the first week of April , according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports.
"The Phillies' 3-2 comeback victory over the Giants in the first game of the doubleheader is their first series victory since April 3-5 when they won 2 of 3 against the Colorado Rockies ," reported Nightengale.
Philadelphia decided to move on from Thomson on April 28 before the first contest of the three-game series against the Giants. While initial reactions to the firing led many to believe Thomson was a scapegoat for the organization's struggles, early results indicate the franchise could be on the verge of righting the ship.
While the club hopes for a major turnaround with Mattingly in charge, Justin Crawford is flashing major signs of potential to begin his MLB career. His .244 batting average and .319 OBP are impressive for a first-year player. However, he has yet to record his first career home run this season.
