The Philadelphia Phillies battered Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes once again on Wednesday night. Philadelphia defeated Pittsburgh, 10-6, and Skenes put together arguably the worst showing of his career. He allowed a season-high seven earned runs.
Skenes is trying to figure out why it all went wrong .
"I didn't execute very well," Skenes said, per ESPN. "That's really what it comes down to. I fell behind on some counts and left some balls over the plate."
Skenes lasted just four innings, as Phillies hitters continued to batter him. He had to throw 35 pitches in the second inning alone. Phillies slugger Trea Turner homered off him.
"I think we've got a good team," Turner said. "I think sometimes there's no explanation, but I feel like we've got a good lineup and we battle. We know he's really good, and he's always going to give us a fight, and you kind of tip your cap when he gets you and move on and try to have the next guy pick you up. I thought we did a good job keeping it moving against him."
The Pirates and Phillies are going in opposite directions. While Pittsburgh got off to a promising start to the season, the Bucs are again below .500. The Pirates hold a 43-44 record after Wednesday's loss.
While the Pirates struggle, so does Skenes . The ace's ERA has climbed to 3.62 on the season, following Wednesday's loss.
Things are going great right now for the Phillies. After Rob Thomson was replaced as manager by Don Mattingly, something sparked in this team. Philadelphia is currently second in the National League East, with a 49-38 mark.
The Phillies and Pirates play again on Thursday. Philadelphia has now won seven of their last 10 games.
