Phillies sign former St. Louis Cardinals standout to minor-league deal originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia
BOSTON – The Phillies made an interesting signing Tuesday when they added veteran outfielder Dylan Carlson to the system on a minor-league deal.
Carlson, 27, was once one of the game's top prospects in the St. Louis Cardinals system. He was the 33rd overall pick in the 2016 draft and finished third in the National League rookie of the year voting in 2021 when he hit .266 with 18 homers, 65 RBIs and a .780 OPS for the Cards. The switch-hitter failed to build on that season and eventually moved on to Tampa Bay, Baltimore and the Chicago Cubs . He appeared in three games with the Cubs this season and was released from their Triple A club earlier this month.
Carlson will report to Triple A Lehigh Valley. He gives the organization experienced depth at all three outfield positions. The Phils also have outfielders Steward Berroa and Gabrielle Rincones Jr. in the minors. They are both on the 40-man roster, as is Otto Kemp , who can also play outfield. Bryan De La Cruz , who has played parts of five seasons in the majors, is another outfielder at Triple A. He is on a minor-league contract.
The Phillies released outfielder Oscar Mercado from their Triple A club.
