Konnor Griffin represents something the Pittsburgh Pirates have not had much of in the last decade: long-term hope. Although Paul Skenes is likely to be pitching elsewhere before the end of the 2020s, the rookie shortstop and No. 1-ranked MLB prospect is locked-up for a while after signing a nine-year, $140 million contract extension. But when a 19-year-old talent receives a huge commitment just a couple weeks into his big-league career, overwhelming pressure is sure to follow.
Griffin struggled through his first 19 games, but he might have turned a corner on his 20th birthday . The No. 9 overall selection in the 2024 MLB Draft hit his first home run with the Pirates in Friday's 6-0 win versus the Milwaukee Brewers . Needless to say, he was relieved .
"It was awesome," Griffin told SportsNet Pittsburgh after belting a 386-foot dinger off two-time All-Star Brandon Woodruff . "Glad to get that one out of the way. Now we can get rolling. I had no idea what it was going to be like, and I just got a good swing off and the ball did its thing…. Every day I figure out something new. Today was a good day. Gonna continue to build on that and just keep doing what I do, and just be me. And just keep working hard."
Even phenoms require some leeway when they first start out in The Show, but dollar signs can reduce people's patience. Fortunately, it seems like Konnor Griffin is staying in the right frame of mind. He went 3-for-4 with the aforementioned homer, three RBIs and a run scored in what is his best game to this point.
Griffin will take a .214/.273/.314/.587 slash line to Saturday's road matchup against the Brewers. Perhaps the flood gates have opened following this breakthrough performance.
