Pittsburgh Pirates star rookie Konnor Griffin is currently dealing with a right elbow strain. On Sunday, the Pirates officially placed Griffin on the 10-day injured list. However, first baseman/outfielder Ryan O'Hearn was activated from the IL in a corresponding move. The Pirates also announced that right-handed pitcher Carmen Mlodzinski was placed on the restricted list and right-handed pitcher Cam Sanders was recalled from Triple-A.
O'Hearn, who signed with the Pirates this past offseason , was dealing with a quad strain. The 32-year-old was hitting .289/.368/.459 to go along with seven home runs and six doubles across 44 games played. He brings a veteran presence to the ball club that is crucial for the Pirates. Pittsburgh is hoping to compete, so O'Hearn will make a significant impact.
Griffin, a 20-year-old rookie, also makes a crucial impact. Through 51 games played, he has hit .270/.327/.402 with four home runs, nine doubles, two triples and 14 stolen bases. He is expected to make a serious run for the National League Rookie of the Year Award.
On Sunday, the Pirates defeated the Minnesota Twins 9-3. O'Hearn hit a home run in his return from injury. Pittsburgh is now 32-28 this season. The ball club is in fourth place in the National League Central standings. They are five games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the NL Central.
The Pirates will attempt to continue climbing the standings despite Konnor Griffin's injury absence. Ryan O'Hearn's presence will certainly help Pittsburgh.
The team's next game is scheduled for Tuesday night at 8:10 PM EST against the Houston Astros .
