When the Pittsburgh Pirates made the decisions they did at Major League Baseball's trade deadline, they didn't just expect some of those guys to come in and make an impact for them on the mound this year.
Obviously, one of the focuses for the Pirates was improving in the bullpen, and they accomplished that by landing a guy like Luke Weaver . Weaver has been decent in Pittsburgh outside of his one outing against the Boston Red Sox in which he allowed three earned runs and four hits in one inning.
Beyond that one outing, Weaver has been essentially lights out, allowing just one earned run in 6.2 innings.
He's been just as good as advertised, and according to the latest, while coming over from New York , playing for the New York Mets and the New York Yankees prior to that isn't easy, Weaver's actually doing a really good job of keeping guys in Pittsburgh engaged and trying to just learn a whole lot about how he can help them.
"It's not easy to get traded mid-year, especially when you've spent the last three seasons in New York. He's feeling himself getting more comfortable, both to his role in the bullpen and on the team. He's made it a point to find as many conversations as possible, talking while shagging balls in the outfield to spending extra time in the food room.
"He's already been a resource for other players. Braxton Ashcraft credited him for some mentality advice. Mason Montgomery , a full-time starting pitcher up until Triple-A in 2024, has spoken with Weaver and Kirby Yates as he develops his between-outings routine," Colin Beazley wrote .
Weaver has team control through next season, too, so unless the Pirates make a strange decision by trading him over the winter months, there's no reason to think that he won't be on the roster at least for the next year. If the Pirates can get the guy that everybody knows Weaver is, there's reason to believe that they'll be in a really good spot.
