Though the Pittsburgh Pirates ’ pitching rotation is highlighted by Paul Skenes , one other pitcher that the team has yet to see play this season is Jared Jones . With the Pirates looking for a World Series in the near future , the team wants to be healthy, and Jones is a part of that, as manager Don Kelly gives an update on the timetable for the pitcher.
Jones was placed on the 60-day injured list (IL) after undergoing season-ending internal brace surgery in May of 2025, after also having elbow issues in the spring training prior. But with the 60-day IL ending around late May, that’s the area where Kelly looks, saying there “hasn’t been any huge setbacks.”
“I don’t have any specifics, 60 days, so we’re looking end of May, beginning of June. Don’t have any specific details on it. Hasn’t been any huge setbacks to that,” Kelly said, according to Dominic Campbell.
If there’s a positive, it’s that Jones is back in the clubhouse with Pittsburgh, which is a treat for the team.
“Yeah, great. It was great to see Jared walking around, smile on his face,” Kelly said. “I know he was excited to get up here and get out of Florida. It will be great to see his pen (Tuesday), hopefully everything continues to go well, and we’ll see him here in short order.”
Pirates general manager comments on Jared Jones
The Pirates’ general manager, Ben Cherington, also spoke about Jones recently, and while there isn’t a scheduled rehab start yet for Jones, he is progressing nicely.
“There hasn’t been any changes to the calendar,” Cherington said, via Sports Illustrated. “We haven’t started a date for the start of the rehab assignment, but we are tracking in the same area. He had a live yesterday, a two-up live BP that went well. Velocity is there. He threw all of his pitches; he’s feeling good. He’s getting closer to that real game activity. Then it’s just a matter of getting hitters out, the routine part of it.”
At any rate, it remains to be seen when Jones eventually returns for Pittsburgh.
