With the Pittsburgh Pirates getting swept by the Philadelphia Phillies during the weekend with the two rivals, Sunday's 6-0 loss was a disappointing one with a start from Paul Skenes . As the Pirates' star in Skenes has been delivering electric performances , the Phillies got the better of him on Sunday, leading the 23-year-old to talk honestly about his outing.
Skenes would record his third loss of the season as he threw five innings, allowing five earned runs, six hits, and walking one batter in 92 pitches, as he struck out nine. Including giving up a home run to Bryce Harper , Skenes would say that it was a lack of execution on his part, via SportsNet Pittsburgh .
"I just didn't execute a few pitches, and I mean, they did a good job there, I'll have to rewatch it," Skenes said.
There's no denying that Philadelphia boasts a dangerously offensive team with Harper, Kyle Schwarber , and others, as Skenesn talks about that challenge.
"It's challenging, but it's the big leagues, you know. Every lineup is good, so yeah, just got to execute a little more consistently," Skenes said.
Paul Skenes is confident in the Pirates to bounce back
After the loss to the Phillies, Skenes is still sporting a 2.62 ERA with the Pirates in 2026, to go along with 63 strikeouts and a 6-3 record. While the sweep by the Phillies to Pittsburgh is one that stings, Skenes is confident in the team to bounce back and respond, especially due to the "character" of the ball club.
"Yeah, I'm not worried about it. I think it's probably a good time for an off day, but yeah, I think we're in a good spot going into, you know, this next stretch, and not worried about how we'll respond at all," Skenes said.
"Just the character we have, you know, we've shown it so far, and I think we'll continue to show it, you know, we're gonna keep fighting," Skenes continued.
The Pirates currently have a 24-23 record, which puts them fourth in the NL Central, as the team starts a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.
