Pittsburgh Pirates superstar Paul Skenes looked utterly mortal on Opening Day versus the New York Mets , but he has quickly recaptured his air of invincibility. Aside from that aforementioned clunker in Citi Field and a shaky outing against the St. Louis Cardinals on April 30, the 2025 National League Cy Young Award winner has been absolutely masterful on the mound . He flirted with a no-hitter once again.
Skenes flummoxed the Colorado Rockies in Tuesday’s 3-1 victory, posting a perfect game through six innings. Mickey Moniak dealt the phenomenal right-hander his first blemish of the evening , launching a ball that a diving Oneil Cruz was unable to corral. Skenes appreciated the effort and pushed through.
He allowed just two hits in eight scoreless innings for the second straight start (did so versus the Arizona Diamondbacks last Wednesday). The 23-year-old recorded 10 strikeouts and did not walk a single batter. This marks the second time in less than three weeks that Skenes took a no-hitter into the seventh, per USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, with the first occasion coming against the Milwaukee Brewers on April 24.
Since the Pirates (23-19) are grappling for position in the incredibly competitive National League Central, Skenes has become more valuable than ever to this franchise. The 2024 NL Rookie of the Year gives his club a chance to grab a W nearly every time he steps on the rubber. Genuine workhorses are hard to come by in the modern game, but a Paul Skenes no-hitter just feels inevitable at this point.
Although the Rockies were spared on this night, No. 30 remains mighty intimidating. He will try to maintain this magnificent form in his 10th start of the season.
