The Pittsburgh Pirates are fighting to reach the Major League Baseball Playoffs, for the first time since 2015. Pittsburgh got hit with some tough injury news to rookie Konnor Griffin on Tuesday. The Pirates are getting some good news , though, regarding the health of some of their other players.
"Other Pirate injury notes: Oneil Cruz is swinging a bat. Spencer Horwitz has started a running program in Bradenton. Wilber Dotel will pitch for Altoona. Evan Sisk is dealing with a posterior left elbow. He is resting," Pirates reporter Alex Stumpf posted to X, formerly Twitter.
The Bucs need these players. Cruz is an excellent base runner, while also one of the team's most powerful hitters. Dotel and Sisk have been promising at times working from the bullpen. Horwitz has also hit well at times.

Pittsburgh is banged up right now. Griffin, who has been excellent this season when healthy, recently suffered a torn finger tendon. He is out until September .
"There was a bunch of options that were discussed and presented to Konnor and team through the physicians," Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk said, per MLB.com. "The best choice is non-operative care, the six weeks of splint and immobilization to make sure that this can properly heal and that it can return to the high function."
Pittsburgh made it a point to add offense before the 2026 season. The Pirates promoted Griffin from the minor leagues, while at the same time adding Marcell Ozuna , Brandon Lowe and Ryan O'Hearn.
It has worked to an extent. The team is 46-45 on the season, but fourth in the National League Central. The Pirates have actually struggled with their pitching, as ace Paul Skenes has had some setbacks . The Bucs bullpen has also blown save opportunities throughout the campaign.
Pittsburgh starts a three-game series with the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday.
